If you suspect food concerns, body image concerns, weight and/or eating concerns contact Community Connections with a phone call. If you are working with an individual and you believe the person is struggling with disordered eating Community Connections can assess the individual to determine if her or she is in need of Eating Disorder Treatment.

Common Symptoms of Eating Disorders:

  • Dramatic weight gain or loss
  • Preoccupation with food, weight, and body shape
  • Medical complications, such as amenorrhea, bradycardia,
    unexpected osteopenia or osteoporosis, electrolyte abnormalities,
    low body temperature, orthostatic hypotension
  • Rapid or persistent decline or increase in food intake
  • Purging, food restricting, binge eating, compulsive eating,
    compulsive exercising
  • Abuse of diet pills, laxatives or diuretics
  • Restriction of food intake and denial of eating problems despite
    the concerns of others
  • Eating in secret, sneaking or hiding food, disrupting family meals,
    feeling out of control with food and having constant food thoughts

How you Can Help:

Begin discussing eating habits:

  • Express to the member you are concerned about their eating (or weight, body image, etc.).
  • Ask if you can “discuss how you typically eat and your relationship with food?”
  • Offer the member assistance and let them know that you can assist in identifying appropriate treatment options.
